Jamaicans in Atlanta Mourn Passing of Astley Leslie

The Jamaican Community in Atlanta mourns the passing Mr. Astley Leslie who passed on May 28th, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia at age 89.

Mr. Leslie was well known and loved in the community. He was a member of the  Atlanta Jamaican Association since 1993, served as its President in 1995 and from 1997 to 2000.

In Jamaica, he served as the Permanent Secretary in the Jamaican Ministry of Social  Security and the Ministry of Labor before joining the International Labor Organization – an agency of the United Nations Organization  – to establish, and develop over a fifteen year period, the Caribbean Labor Administration Center in Barbados.  

In Georgia, he was a founding member of the Association for Conflict Resolution – Georgia Chapter  and was a certified Conflict Resolution Specialist registered with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution. 

He was also a founding member of the Sugar Canes – a Jamaican folk singing group established in Atlanta to promote Jamaican culture.

Mr. Leslie is survived by his wife, Sybil, two daughters and grandchildren.

SBA Administrator to Speak at launch of the Jamaican Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta (JAMCHAM)

Atlanta – The Jamaican Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta, Inc. (JAMCHAM) has announced that Cassius Butts, Regional Administrator for the US Small Business Administration (SBA) will be the keynote speaker at the chamber’s official launch, scheduled for Saturday, June 27th at the Marriott Century Center Hotel, 2000 Century Boulevard NE, Atlanta, GA 30345 at 6:00 pm.

Cassius Butts was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2011. He is responsible for the delivery of SBA programs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. During his appointment, Cassius has managed oversight of three record breaking years for SBA lending in Region IV. Nearly $12 billion in SBA-backed loans were awarded to small businesses within the aforementioned eight states.

The Jamaican Chamber of Commerce of Atlanta was formed to provide a voice, access and empowerment for Caribbean businesses in the Metro Atlanta area and beyond. Referrals, education, advertising, lobbying and networking are some of the services the chamber lists among its benefits.

The chamber is governed by a 20-member Board of Directors chaired by Dr. David Panton, Private Equity Investor and Adjunct Professor at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School; President Dr. Glen Laman, entrepreneur and author of Jamaican Entrepreneurship, and Executive Vice President Sylvia McClure who heads her own Financial Services Company: Secretary Nicole Birch, Attorney at Law and Treasurer Barry Bennett, Owner and President of  Metals and Materials Engineers, LLC .

The Chamber also boasts members such as Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, Hon. Franz Hall who is an honorary member; Jamaica’s Honorary Consul to Atlanta, Hon. Jewel Scott; President of the Atlanta Jamaican Association, Alan Stewart; former Civil Servant and adviser to the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Percival Griffiths and Dr. Basil Kong retired CEO of the Association of Black Cardiologists.

The chamber is registered in the state of Georgia as a 501(C)(6) nonprofit corporation.

JAMPRO brings Roadshow to Atlanta

Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) recently conducted its Atlanta Roadshow showcasing Jamaican products that are export ready.  The program included a Buyer breakfast session in which exporters and buyers met to discuss business opportunities.The roadshow also featured an expo of Jamaican products that allowed customers to sample selected products.

Atlanta Jamaican, Dr. Glen Laman, recently participated in the Leaders to Leaders Symposium on Entrepreneurship held at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in Kingston on April 15, 2015.  He spoke on Jamaican entrepreneurship, the lessons from his book of the same name.

Other speakers included Ambassador Audrey Marks, CEO and founder of Paymaster; Gary “Butch” Hendrickson, CEO of Continental Baking Company; and Patrick Casserly, co-founder and CEO of PCR Nearshore, LLC.

The Caribbean community would like to extend congratulations to Atlanta Jamaican Ms. Kim Walker.

Ms. Walker was recently recognized as a 2014 Gold Award Winner in the SunTrust Performance Excellence Awards program. It’s truly an honor to be recognized for exceptional contributions to the business, with an award bestowed on only 5% of employees corporate wide.

Ms. Walker is a Vice President/ModelTrader at SunTrust Bank. She heads up the Investment Advisory Group Model Trading division which consists of investment model creation, maintenance and streamlined execution under the investment direction of senior management.

A graduate of Holy Childhood High School, Ms. Walker earned her BSc, in Finance from Florida Atlantic University. She later graduated with a MBA, General Management from Troy University and completed an Accelerated Financial Planning Program (AccFP) at Kaplan University.

Watford Hill Primary School: A Model for the Jamaican Diaspora

Something wonderful is taking place at the Watford Hill Primary School; it should be a model for the Jamaican Diaspora.

The Watford Hill Primary School was established in 1896, is owned by the Jamaica Baptist Union (JBU) and is located in the parish of Hanover in the rural community of Woodlands. It is a small school with 77 students and 3 teachers, a part time reading coach, and the principal. Most of the students are from the community with only a few from other neighboring communities.

Some eight years ago, Atlanta Jamaican Glenda Erskine and her siblings started the Douglas and Linda Walker Foundation at the Watford Hill Primary School where they once attended. The foundation has since implemented a canteen breakfast and other programs.  The results have been remarkable.
